Thursday Tidbits 1/20/2011

It’s been a while since I did a Thursday tidbits. Just a few things:

• This is a very interesting study done with a border collie on the possibility of the number of words a dog might learn. This goes to show A) dogs are pretty smart creatures and B) border collies are seriously smart and should never be forced into being a house pet without a job to do.
• NOVA will run a related program next month on dogs.
• This is ONLY for people who have seen the movies Black Swan and Center Stage as it compares the two in a snarky tone. Very funny if you know both movies. It DOES CONTAIN SPOILERS so don’t click if you don’t want to be spoiled on either film.
• Are you a fan of Bill Hader’s Stefon on SNL? Then try the Stefonerator!
• Have you seen the trailer for The Kennedys? The one where Katie Holmes plays Jackie, which the History Channel now refuses to air? She looks terrible.
• Check out that this awesome girl is doing. She took a break from grab school to focus on herself for a semester and even constructed a syllabus and assignments. Very cool and a neat way to hold yourself accountable!
• One of the guys connected to Glee said the following during his Golden Globes speech (and he rocks for saying it), “”Thank you to public school teachers. You don’t get paid like it but you’re doing the most important work in America.”

Thursday Tidbits 8/26/10

I want fall to get here just in the hopes that things will slow down a bit!  In the meantime:

• Nick Galifianakis, cartoonist, writes a tribute to his muse.  It is very, very touching.
• Remember “Clean all the things!” I need this apron.
• Speaking of want, I REALLY want this Hunger Games Cinna shirt.

Unfortunately, that is all I have today.  I did start reading Mockingjay but I’m only about 50 pages in due to lack of time.  Hopefully I can really get in to it this weekend!

Thursday Tidbits 4/15/2010

Happy National Library week, and happy tax day!  Today is the last day to ask your Congressperson to support libraries – ALA makes it so easy for you!  Go send your email now!

• I’ve mentioned my love of goats before, so I have to share the pictures Martha Stewart posted on her blog of adorable goats and chickens and other animals!  Thanks, Jen!
• Who doesn’t love puppies?
• How well do you know Judy Blume? I missed 2 for a score of 82%.  I couldn’t remember the phone rings or the dedication.
• A simple rule that makes you a more polite texter.
• Did you grow up in the Sassy era?  I don’t mean later Sassy when it was bought out, but early Sassy, of Jane Pratt and Karen Catchpole and Christina Kelly.  The great Christina Kelly has a blog now, and it is new and already on my must read list.
• While I grew up mostly in the 80s (graduated from high school in ’93) I have a lot more love for the 90s and often find myself annoyed with the 80s things people love.  So I was excited to find the blog Children of the 90s.
• Amen to the blogger at The Fine Cut who wrote about inconsiderate people at the movies.  I’d pay more to see a movie if there was one theater for people who wish to talk and use cell phones and another theater for those of us who desire the quiet darkness to get lost in for 2 hours.

Thursday Tidbits

We finally went back to school on Wednesday this week.  I can’t believe we had 2 weeks off due to the February snow.

• War dogs are remembered.  Dogs are such amazing creatures.
• I’m a sucker for movie montages, and this one devoted to love in the movies is fun.
• Have you seen the trailer for Toy Story 3?  I love the Toy Story movies!

It was a month ago today that we had to put Jake to sleep.  I miss him more than I can say.

Thursday Tidbits

Today is my 1 year blogiversary!  Happy birthday, little blog!  Just a couple tidbits for today:

• Puppy cam is back! The famous shiba inu who had her puppy cam once before has given birth to another litter.  Puppies always brighten a day!
• I have long been a fan of Joshua Jackson, and I don’t hide it.  He’s my TV boyfriend.  Here is an awesome older interview (about a year old).  He talks about Fringe and buying his childhood home.  My favorite part is when he talks about slipping and calling himself Pacey on Fringe.
• There are some exciting YA books due out this year!
• February 2nd is less than a week away!  That day will bring the Oscar nominations and the final season of LOST! So exciting!
• I sent home 3 packages from ALA Midwinter: 1 poster tube, 1 small package of books and 1 large box of books.  Both the poster tube and small package arrived last week, but my box is still MIA.  I am worried all those books will never arrive! I didn’t insure it or get a tracking number, unfortunately.
• There was a great blog blitz of bloggers putting forth unsung YA lit and it is worth checking out.  I was glad to see some great titles on many lists!

Thursday Tidbits

Today’s Thursday Tidbits will be short because I have two other posts today: the final V.C. Andrews book in the Read the Good Trash challenge and my top ten favorite YA-related books of 2009.  So, quickly:

• I’m so glad I am not the only person who hates Crash.  Seriously, I hate that movie.
• I love Jon Stewart and The Daily Show. I honestly don’t know if I could have survived the past decade without him, and I am glad I didn’t have to.  So look back at the past decade via Jon’s appearance and The Daily Show‘s recap of each year in the decade.
• Need another decade retrospective? Check out this NY Times chart!
• Ten words we all need to stop misspelling now. Especially your/you’re and their/they’re!

Merry Christmas Eve!

• If you have not been introduced to the awesomeness of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander series, maybe this post on Galleysmith can give you an idea of what you are missing.
• Looking for a book to read over the holidays?  Harper Teen has made Lesley Livingstone’s Wondrous Strange available online as a free ebook, and Maureen Johnson is providing the free ebook of Suite Scarlett!
• 100 Scope Notes looks back at the year in Children’s Lit.
• The producers are holding fast to their pledge to not air new footage, but the way the new LOST trailer is cut using old footage makes me even more excited for the final season!
• While I don’t condone stereotyping, this post about stereotyping by one’s favorite author is pretty funny.
• This video of a Doggy Christmas Surprise is so cute!
• This is a montage of the movies from 2009.  It reminds me that I’ve seen a lot of good movies this year, and have many more that need to be added to my Netflix queue.  It is long (7 minutes) but worth watching if you are a movie fan.

Does the song “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus” creep anyone else out?  The singer is either watching Mommy cheat on Daddy, or watching his or her parents engage in weird role playing.  Another Christmas song I can’t stand is “Little Drummer Boy” – the melody is grating and that incessant “pa-rum-pum-pum-pum.”

• The past decade from the viewpoint of 9 year olds: worth watching just for the last minute when they talk about what they are afraid of.

• This recap of New Moon is hilarious!

I can’t believe it is December already!

• Liz at Teacozy has tips on buying books for the holidays – and on receiving them!

• I’m on a few listservs, and while I appreciate the help they can provide, they often provide just as much frustration.  I am glad to learn I’m not alone in this, as Cindy and Lynn feel the same way.

• The Unprofessional Critic has a humorous list of things she learned watching tv.

• Have you seen Things Librarians Fancy? It’s old, and I meant to share it before, and just forgot.  But it is pretty correct!

• I had no idea that Mo Willems and Jon J. Muth are collaborating on a book – City Dog, Country Frog.  They are two of my favorite children’s book authors!  Mo Willems posted a photo of the cover on his blog and I am in love with that dog! I can’t wait to read it!

• Ever wonder how many people are currently in space?

• I’m late to the game, but have you seen Awful Library Books?  I know I weeded the Nov. 16th book from my high school library last year.  I’m sending this blog to anyone who complains about us weeding the library.

• Red Dog Rising sounds really interesting, and the foreword is written by one of the Mythbusters, but I need to know if the dog dies at the end.  I can’t read books where the dog dies, I’m always left too traumatized.

• Considering some Black Friday shopping? A friend of mine from high school, Jamie, did a spot on her local news about things to think about.
• A dear friend of mine from college, Shaun, has spent several year working with a camera truck, which he built himself.  NPR did a story on him, and you can always check out his website at Cameratruck.net.  If you want to learn more, there is a short documentary available, too.  (Short like 10 minutes.)
